For nine generations the Boston was the plain one: a firm, low, lightly cushioned trainer that runners used for tempo work and, often enough, raced in. The tenth version, introduced in mid-2021 alongside the second Adios Pro, abandoned that.
adidas moved the shoe onto a much taller platform, pairing a Lightstrike Pro layer with denser Lightstrike EVA underneath and running carbon-infused rods through the length of the midsole. The rods came from the brand's marathon racer, where they stand in for a full carbon plate and are meant to guide the foot through toe-off without stiffening the whole shoe.
Reviewers at launch treated it less as an update than as a different shoe wearing a familiar name, and the line's identity moved with it. The Boston became a cushioned trainer carrying racing hardware rather than a lean racer in its own right.
