Boston has been adidas' tempo shoe for two decades, the half-step between the Adios racer and a cushioned daily trainer. The twelfth generation, released in 2023, was the largest redraw the model had taken in years. adidas replaced the previous shoe's combination of a carbon plate and rods with full-length ENERGYRODS 2.0, and rebuilt the midsole so the two foams sat closer in feel: a Lightstrike Pro layer above a softer, lighter Lightstrike 2.0 base instead of the firm EVA earlier versions used underneath.
The geometry moved with it. Reviewers measured roughly 38mm at the heel and 31mm at the forefoot for a 7mm drop, down from the 8.5mm drop of the tenth and eleventh editions, and the upper was reduced to a thin engineered mesh with minimal heel padding. Testers described the result as landing softer and rolling through more smoothly than the Boston 11, which had a noticeable step between its firm base and its springy top layer. This is the wide-fit build, offering extra forefoot volume on the same tooling; the black and carbon treatment keeps the upper plain and lets the white midsole wall carry the contrast.
