adidas launched Climacool in 2002 as a ventilation system rather than as a shoe, with a campaign built around the idea of feeling a breeze through the upper. The engineering behind it was more thorough than most breathability claims: mesh across the top, plastic vents curving under the arch, and channels through the midsole and outsole, so air could move beneath the foot as well as over it. Everything not needed for that was stripped out. This version keeps the structure and takes it into all black, which changes how the shoe reads: the vent geometry becomes texture instead of a diagram, and the shoe loses the clinical look the early colourways traded on. The line has since been brought back repeatedly as a lifestyle model, and more recently as a testbed for printed lattice construction, but the argument has not changed in two decades: a shoe designed around moving air rather than around holding a foot.
