The Attitude was a mid-1980s adidas basketball high-top, and Jeremy Scott used its tall collar as a mounting point for most of his animal designs: bears, pandas, teddy bears. The Gorilla belongs to that run.
The base is entirely black, so the shoe reads as an ordinary high-top until the plush head, arms and fingers register. The arms hang down the lateral and medial sides as separate pieces rather than being printed on, and the gorilla wears a removable shirt of its own, which is the detail that separates it from a novelty graphic.
It reached retailers in spring 2012 at two hundred dollars, part of a seasonal delivery that also carried the winged models. The animal series is what the collaboration is remembered for, and this is one of the few pairs where the animal is a distinct object attached to a shoe rather than a shoe shaped like an animal.
