Boost was designed for running, and putting it in a hiking shoe is a bet that the same qualities (high energy return, resistance to going flat in the cold) matter over a long day on foot. The Free Hiker was adidas's version of that bet, and the second-generation low arrived in 2023 with a more durable nylon mesh upper, polyurethane reinforcement over the wear points, a waterproof membrane and a rubber compound co-developed with a tyre manufacturer, cut with deep multi-directional lugs. Independent testing recorded shock absorption well above the category average. The trade-offs are consistent across reviews: it is heavy, stiffer than the cushioning suggests, needs breaking in, and breathes less than a mesh shoe without a membrane. What it gives back is durability and support over distance. This version is black throughout with grey through the sole: the least conspicuous of the colourways, which suits a shoe built to be worn until it fails.
