The Free Hiker was an argument. When adidas released it in February 2019 it was the brand's first hiking boot built on Boost, with a stretchy Primeknit upper and a sock-like collar in place of the leather panels and stitched seams the category had run on for decades. Traditional boot buyers were sceptical. It found an audience regardless, partly among long-distance hikers wanting something lighter than a boot and more protective than a trail runner, and partly among people who never left pavement with it. Cold.Rdy is the adidas designation for cold-weather construction, and applying it here addresses the knit boot's most obvious weakness, since a breathable upper becomes a liability once the temperature drops. Insulation sits behind the knit rather than on top of it, leaving the flex and the shape intact. Metal grey with black is the restrained end of the outdoor range.
