West came to adidas with a sneaker career already behind him. He had worked with Nike on the Air Yeezy in 2009, becoming the first non-athlete the company gave a shoe deal to, and the split that followed made his next partner a matter of public speculation. adidas ended it on 3 December 2013 by confirming the collaboration.
What took another fourteen months to appear was not a running shoe or a re-coloured heritage model but a boot. Light brown suede covers the whole upper, cut high and closed by a wide fabric strap across the midfoot; a zipper hidden on the lateral side does the actual work of getting the foot in. Perforations open across the toe, rope laces sit in the eyelets, and the whole thing stands on a partially ribbed sole with Boost cushioning in an off-white finish.
The February 2015 release was deliberately scarce, gone within minutes of going up, with a wider round of boutique and retailer stock following later that month. It listed at $350, a figure that placed the debut well above anything adidas Originals was charging at the time, and set the pricing expectation for everything the line released afterwards.
