Gable's name has carried weight in wrestling for more than fifty years, and the shoe leans on two separate chapters of it. The first is Munich, 1972, where he took the freestyle gold at 68 kg, the marker ASICS stamps at the back of this shoe. The second is longer: from 1976 to 1997 he coached the University of Iowa to a 355-21-5 dual record, fifteen NCAA team championships including nine in a row from 1978, and twenty-one consecutive Big Ten titles. That nine-year national streak matched the longest any American school had assembled in any sport.
The Evo line is a competition shoe rather than a commemorative one. This third version cuts the collar high over the ankle, the way collegiate wrestlers prefer, and builds the upper from black synthetic suede: light, close-fitting, and less prone to stretching out over a season than leather. Gold leather stripes outlined in white run the panels, Gable's signature is set at the lateral collar, and the outsole lays out traction zones sized for mat surfaces rather than for a floor with give.
