The Kayano is named after a person. In 1993 ASICS designer Toshikazu Kayano set out to build a stability shoe that was structured without feeling heavy, and the company put his surname on it, an unusual move in an industry that names shoes after animals, weather and abstractions. His first version took its support lines from the shell of a stag beetle, an exoskeleton logic that shaped how the overlays wrapped the foot. It replaced the GT-Cool Express at the top of the range and has stayed there ever since. Nearly thirty years later the twenty-seventh edition was still working the same brief: hold a foot that rolls inward through the back half of a long run, and cushion it enough that the structure never becomes the thing you notice. Metropolis with lime is a cool grey lifted by a single bright accent, a spring-season pairing the brand used widely that year.
