Shoe designer Toshikazu Kayano built the first Gel-Kayano Trainer in 1993 around an observation about stag beetles: a hard outer shell could protect something that still needed to move quickly. ASICS put his name on it because the word was easy for English speakers to say, and thirty years later it still fronts the brand's premium stability shoe. The twenty-ninth version made the biggest structural change the line had seen in years. The Dynamic DuoMax medial post and the plastic Trusstic element both went, replaced by LiteTruss, and the midsole moved to FF Blast Plus, a foam rated roughly fifteen per cent lighter and softer than the FF Blast it succeeded. The shoe came out about ten grams under the 28 while, by most accounts, feeling more stable rather than less. Black with sun peach keeps the loud part confined to the accents, which is how most of this model's actual customers prefer it.
