After the wholesale rebuild of the thirtieth version, the thirty-first Kayano consolidated. PureGEL stayed in the rearfoot and the 4D Guidance System stayed in the midfoot, but the main midsole moved to FF Blast Plus Eco, a foam ASICS uses to lower the shoe's carbon footprint while adding cushioning. The most interesting detail is that the guidance insert is a different, more resilient foam than the rest of the midsole; stability comes from geometry and a bouncier rubbery section under the arch rather than from a firm post, which is the opposite of how the line worked for its first twenty-five years. Reviewers noted a reshaped heel, flared and curved where the previous one was blocky, plus an engineered mesh upper and grippier outsole. This is the wide-fitting build. Carbon with taupe grey is about as understated as a premium trainer gets, which has always been this model's register.
