GEL is the technology ASICS is best known for, and it predates most of what the brand now sells. Introduced in 1986 (first in Japan on the Freaks Alpha, then internationally in the GT-II), the silicone-based inserts were designed to take a vertical impact and disperse it sideways, and they still sit in the heel of shoes at every price point in the range, including this one. The Saiun is a road trainer built around that principle rather than around a new foam: polyurethane overlays hold the midfoot in place, mesh underlays handle airflow, and the GEL sits under the heel where most road runners land. Safety yellow with silver detailing is a visibility choice rather than a fashion one. ASICS has long built entire seasonal collections around low-light running, and a fluorescent upper is the cheapest version of that idea: obvious in daylight, catching headlights at dusk, and needing no reflective panels to do the job.
