When ASICS launched the MetaRide in early 2019 it was a statement piece: an expensive, deliberately limited model built to prove that a curved sole could cut the energy runners waste flexing the ankle. The GlideRide followed that September, and its entire reason for existing was reach. ASICS said the development had been fast-tracked specifically to get the technology to more runners quickly, and it went on sale globally on 27 September 2019.
The rocker geometry carried over in modified form, tuned for daily training rather than a showcase. The result rolls forward under the runner and rewards a steady, unchanging pace, which made it a long-run and recovery option more than a workout shoe.
Gun Metal is one of the darker finishes on that first-generation chassis. At $160 it undercut the MetaRide substantially, which was the whole point of the exercise.
