Entry-level running shoes are designed against a price rather than against a runner, and the compromises show in predictable places: a firmer foam that lasts longer than it feels good, a simpler upper, less of everything that costs money. The eleventh version of this model is a well-judged example. It sits at the bottom of Asics's stability line at about half the price of the flagship, using a dual-density midsole with firmer material along the inner edge to resist an inward-rolling stride (the company's replacement for the moulded plastic wedge stability shoes carried for decades), with a Gel unit in the outer heel softening the landing. It is not a shoe for long miles, and reviewers are direct about that. It is a shoe for finding out whether you are going to keep running. This black pair takes the same build on a plain mesh upper with electric blue through the branding and sole, released alongside its brighter sibling in spring 2022.
