The LyteRacer belongs to a family of ASICS racing shoes developed primarily for the Japanese domestic market, where they have long been the default choice of competitive road runners. For years the only way to get a pair outside Japan was through importers, and the shoes arrived with a reputation for being stripped-back and hard-wearing rather than technologically ambitious.
The template has held. An earlier LyteRacer weighed 7.3 ounces on a 25mm heel and 16mm forefoot, with a soft plastic shank under the midfoot for longitudinal stiffness, a durable mesh upper and a softish heel paired with a firm forefoot. The fourth version follows the same logic with FlyteFoam in the midsole and Trusstic reinforcing the middle of the sole: a shoe that handles a marathon, a tempo run or a track session without specialising in any of them.
