The Magic Speed line is ASICS' attempt to sell a carbon plate at a price ordinary training budgets can absorb. The third generation, at a hundred and sixty dollars, is where that argument got easiest to make: the plate became full carbon rather than the mixed carbon-and-plastic unit of the second version, and the midsole went to FF Blast Plus throughout instead of layering that foam over older FlyteFoam.
Stack heights came down about a millimetre from the previous model, sitting near 36mm at the heel and 29mm at the forefoot in men's sizing. That is tall by ordinary standards and short of what the brand's top-end marathon racers carry, which is the point. Reviewers consistently placed it as a workout shoe that can also race, rather than a pure competition shoe.
The one recurring complaint was fit. Multiple testers found it snug and about half a size short, closer to older racing flats than to a modern trainer, and recommended sizing up for anything long.
This white and black pair, with pink accenting, was among the colorways that carried the model through its 2023 run. The palette leaves the midsole and the plate line visible, which on a shoe sold largely on what is inside it is a reasonable choice.
