The Magic Speed 4 is a substantial rebuild rather than an update. Stack height went up sharply (around 42.5mm at the heel and 32.9mm at the forefoot, above the 40mm ceiling World Athletics sets for road racing), and the shoe gained about an ounce over the third version, settling near 8.4 ounces.
The midsole became a two-material affair. FF Blast Plus carries the heel, while a section of FF Turbo, the lighter and more resilient foam ASICS reserves for its top racers, sits in the forefoot where toe-off happens. The carbon plate was retuned for training rather than racing: distinctly curved through the forefoot but moderately so, sitting between a flat racing plate and the deeply spooned designs used elsewhere.
The result is a shoe that does what this line has always done (deliver a plated ride at a price and a durability that survives daily use) with considerably more foam between the runner and the road. This pair is built on the wide last.
