ASICS built its 2021 racing line around a claim other brands were not making: that runners do not all get faster the same way. Rather than sell one carbon-plated racer, it split the Metaspeed into two shoes tuned for different gaits.
The Edge is the one for cadence-type runners, who take shorter steps with less vertical motion and add speed by turning the legs over faster. Its carbon plate sits lower in the midsole with more curve, which encourages quicker transitions and, by the company's own research, lets those runners extend stride length enough to cut the number of steps in a marathon by roughly 2.6 percent. It launched on 4 June 2021 at two hundred and fifty dollars, about two months after the Sky.
The red and white finish carries the Tokyo naming, tying it to the Games ASICS built the programme around and to the home market the brand races out of.
