ASICS added the Ray to its Metaspeed family in 2025 as the answer to a narrow question: how light can a plated racing shoe get before it stops working? The company's own figure was about 129 grams, which independent testers put at roughly 4.2 ounces for a half pair in a men's US 9, lighter than anything else carrying a carbon plate at the time.
Two components made that possible. The midsole is built entirely from FF Leap, a foam ASICS introduced with this shoe and describes as its lightest, softest and bounciest to date. The upper uses Matryx, a woven material that takes its structure from embedded high-tenacity yarns rather than from added overlays, and removing overlays removes grams.
The trade-off is specificity. ASICS positioned the Ray for runners who want a bouncy, near-weightless ride and noted it suits forefoot strikers in particular, a narrower brief than the Metaspeed Sky and Edge models it sits beside rather than replaces.
It went on sale on 12 August 2025 at three hundred dollars. White with flash red was the launch look: a mostly bare white woven upper with red at the branding and midsole, doing nothing to hide how little material is there.
