The Sky came first. ASICS put it on sale on 31 March 2021 as the stride-type half of its split racing programme, built for runners with a long, loping gait who go faster by covering more ground per step rather than by increasing turnover.
That brief shaped the shoe. The plate and foam geometry are set up to extend stride further while holding energy cost down, and the platform is taller than the Edge, which sits lower and curves more. Both used an energetic midsole foam with a full carbon plate, and both launched at two hundred and fifty dollars, which was the going rate for a plated marathon racer that year.
This red version is dated to April 2021, days after the model reached shops, and carries the Tokyo naming used across ASICS racing product for that summer. The Metaspeed name has since run through several generations, but this is where it starts.
