mita sneakers has operated out of Ueno in Tokyo since the 1990s and is one of the shops that helped build the collaboration format itself, working with Asics repeatedly across three decades. Trico is the shop's recurring palette (the French tricolour of blue, white and red), and it had already appeared on several of its Asics projects, so putting it on the Gel-Kayano 25 in 2018 was a return rather than a new idea. The timing carried the point. The first Gel-Kayano appeared in 1993, a stability running shoe named for Toshikazu Kayano, the engineer who designed it, and the twenty-fifth model marked twenty-five years of continuous production, which almost no running line manages. This version keeps the technical build (the layered support structure, the Gel units front and back) and re-cuts it in deep indigo with white detailing and red at the heel and sole. It shipped alongside a matching Gel-Kayano Trainer, pairing the current performance shoe with the lifestyle silhouette derived from the earlier ones, which reads as the whole argument of the release stated in two objects.
