Most shoes carrying this much foam under the heel also carry a carbon plate. The Superblast does not, and that omission is the point: ASICS takes the compounds it puts in its racing shoes, stacks them 45mm at the heel, and leaves the ride to the foam and the rocker geometry. The result is a trainer people race in without it being sold as a racer.
The second generation changed materials rather than shape. The dual-layer midsole moved from FF Blast Turbo over FF Blast Plus to the newer FF Turbo Plus over FF Blast Plus Eco, which made the ride softer and bouncier. The upper gained volume and breathability, and the outsole was redrawn to address the traction testers flagged on the first version. Weight rose only slightly (around 8.9 ounces in a men's sample against 8.6 for version one), and stack height stayed where it was.
