ASICS launched the Superblast at two hundred and twenty dollars, a price that raised eyebrows for a shoe with no carbon plate in it. What it had instead was height: 45.5mm at the heel and 37.5mm at the forefoot for an 8mm drop, taller than most racing shoes of the period, built from two foams rather than one.
The top layer is the lightweight racing compound ASICS uses in its plated marathon shoes; a firmer, more durable FlyteFoam Blast+ layer sits beneath it and does the structural work. That pairing is why the shoe holds its shape at that stack without a plate to stiffen it.
The weight is the part that surprised people (around 8.8 ounces in a men's ten, and 7.4 in a women's 7.5), light enough that runners started racing in it despite the trainer label. Reviewers described it as a steadier Novablast that could handle easy days, tempo work and long races without feeling out of place in any of them, an unusual range for a max-stack shoe.
Whisper Green over black belongs to that first run, dated 24 November 2022. Later colours settled at two hundred dollars.
