Papaya against violet quartz is a warm orange over a cool pale purple, and it is a brighter pairing than the Kayano usually receives. The shoe was in the middle of the biggest change in its recent history. Version 29 dropped the Dynamic DuoMax post and the plastic Trusstic piece (the structural parts runners could actually feel) in favour of LiteTruss, and moved the midsole to FF Blast Plus, a foam ASICS rated lighter, softer and bouncier than what it replaced. About ten grams came off and, by most accounts, stability improved rather than suffered. Thirty years earlier the first Gel-Kayano Trainer had been built the opposite way, around a rigid heel structure its designer based on a beetle's exoskeleton. The brief has stayed constant even as the means of delivering it have been rebuilt twice.
