Not every trail shoe is built for a mountain. The GEL-Venture occupies the other end of the category: an inexpensive, hard-wearing shoe for fire roads, gravel paths, dog walks and the odd off-road run, sold at roughly a third of what a technical trail racer costs.
The ninth edition made two changes worth noting. The upper was simplified: fewer stitched overlays, more open mesh, which cut some weight and improved breathability over the previous version. The outsole was redrawn with larger and more defined lugs, which is the difference between a shoe that merely tolerates dirt and one that grips it. Cushioning comes from AmpliFoam, a softer compound than the brand’s performance foams, tuned more for comfort underfoot than for energy return; reviewers consistently describe the ride as gentle rather than bouncy.
The triple black finish is the practical choice for the way these actually get used: upper, midsole and lugs all in black, so trail dirt does not show.
