The Trail Scout is the floor of the ASICS off-road range (below the Venture and well below the Sonoma), with no proprietary foam, no rock plate and an EVA midsole doing everything. What it does have is material: reviewers note thick, abrasion-resistant mesh and layers of sturdy synthetic leather, which is why it holds up as a light hiking and walking shoe as readily as a running one. The second version changed one thing meaningfully. The outsole pattern was redesigned for better purchase on uneven ground and the heel structure reworked for stability, which testers found improved grip on technical surfaces while leaving the ride rigid and short on bounce. Everything except deep mud is within its range. Black with Sheet Rock, a pale sandy grey, is a sober pairing for a shoe whose appeal is that it costs almost nothing and refuses to fall apart.
