The Gel-Kayano 5 was the 1999 model in a line that had already been running six years, and it is the one the brand's sportstyle division keeps returning to. Its designer described an upper meant to echo the body's own layering of bone, organ and muscle, and the shoe introduced a teardrop tongue and the QUADRA lacing system alongside GEL visible through two windows and DuoMax midsole support. Then it went away for two decades. When ASICS reissued it, the shape was rebuilt with updated materials and lighter construction while keeping the original details, and further variants followed: one faster in profile, one hybridised with modern cushioning. This is a boutique version of that reissue in wood crepe and orange, a warm, textural pairing far removed from the greys and silvers the original ran in.
