Converse held somewhere between 70 and 80 percent of the basketball shoe market through the 1960s. By the end of the 1970s that was gone, taken by rivals with leather uppers and harder soles, and the company spent the following decades as a canvas-shoe business that happened to have a basketball past. Nike bought it in July 2003 for $309 million.
The return came in 2019, when Converse released the All Star Pro BB, its first serious performance basketball shoe in a very long time. Kelly Oubre Jr. was the first player to test it. The construction is the interesting part: a recognisably Converse outline, proportioned like the brand's own history, sitting on cushioning and tooling developed inside Nike.
This one comes from the City Pack in Photon Dust, a pale grey that keeps the shoe visually close to the plain canvas models it descends from, and listed at $130.
