The Varsity Pack took its cues from collegiate athletic kit, which explains the palette: tan as the base, burgundy as the team colour and black as the outline, a combination that looks pulled off a 1960s letterman jacket rather than off a shop wall. Tan is the unusual part, since Converse rarely uses a warm mid-brown as a primary canvas colour.
It sits on the Chuck 70, the build Converse reissued in 2013 to reproduce the heavier All Star of the late 1960s: canvas near 12 ounces, a rubber foxing stripe raised up the sidewall, ornamental stitching around the toe box, a one-piece bottom sole, the license plate logo at the heel and an OrthoLite insole. At $120 this was priced as a premium release, roughly $35 above a plain Chuck 70 high-top, and our records date it to 30 January 2020.
