Obsidian sits at the point where navy stops looking like navy. In most light it passes for black, and only in direct sun does the blue separate out, which is why Converse has used the shade repeatedly on pieces meant to work as neutrals. Against it, the Egret rubber reads warm rather than stark, softening a colourway that would otherwise be severe.
The silhouette is the standard Chuck Taylor All Star high-top, the shoe Converse has produced since 1917, when it arrived as a basketball model under a different name. The proportions have barely moved since: a canvas upper, a rubber toe cap, metal eyelets, the circular All Star patch at the ankle and a diamond-pattern outsole designed to grip in any direction on a wood floor. This one was listed at $95, toward the top of the range for a canvas Chuck, and our records date it to January 2019.
