Grey and white is the most familiar pairing in this model's history, and this version sticks to it exactly: grey across the upper, white underfoot and on the sidewall N, nothing else anywhere. What separates it from the dozens of other grey 574s New Balance has sold is the price. At $135 it sits well above the eighty to hundred dollar band the model usually occupies, and that is the one genuinely unusual thing about it.
Grey is the colour most closely associated with New Balance's running line, and the 574 has carried it since the shoe arrived as the low-cost member of a 500 series made for rough terrain. The silhouette came together from existing parts, a 576 upper set on a 577 sole, and it has kept those proportions through every revision since: a raised heel, a toe wrapped in rubber, a sole wider than the upper it supports. A plain grey pair puts all of that on display, because without colour blocking there is nothing left to look at but the shape and the seams that define it.
