Every element here points at one city. Hamilton Carhartt started making work clothes in Detroit in 1889 with two sewing machines and five employees, building the company on heavy cotton duck canvas and reinforced stress points for railroad crews and labourers; it is still family-owned and still headquartered in Michigan. Eminem grew up in Detroit and has never really let the association go.
The shoe they chose is Tinker Hatfield's Air Jordan 4, which arrived at the end of 1988 as the first model in the line released worldwide rather than only in the United States. It is the shoe from Spike Lee's advertising campaign and the one Jordan wore for the buzzer-beater against Cleveland in 1989, a design that has always carried more weight than its four original colorways suggest.
This version replaces the usual nubuck with Carhartt's twill in black, adds metallic silver lace tabs over a white midsole with a visible Air unit, and puts two marks at the heel: the rapper's reversed E and a hockey-masked slasher's face. It was made for family and friends in 2015, with a handful of extra pairs auctioned publicly.
