Tinker Hatfield's 1987 Air Max 1 put a window in the midsole and showed the cushioning unit for the first time, a decision that came out of looking at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, a building that runs its pipes and structure on the outside. The Ultra Flyknit keeps that idea and strips away almost everything else. The midsole is Nike's Ultra tooling, cored out to cut weight, and the upper is a single piece of Flyknit: open and airy across the toe and tongue for ventilation, denser and closed at the heel where the shoe needs to hold its shape. There are no leather overlays, no separate mudguard and no stitched panels; the colour blocking that normally comes from layered material is knitted into the yarn instead. Nike called it the lightest version of the model it had made, with Ben Yun leading the design through repeated prototypes. In white with black, the knit's transitions are the only visible construction, which makes the original outline easier to read here than on most later versions.
