It began with a letter. In 2012 a sixteen-year-old named Matthew Walzer, who has cerebral palsy, wrote to Nike's chief executive asking for a shoe he could put on without help before leaving for university. Designer Tobie Hatfield spent three years on the problem, and the first answer reached shops in 2015: a basketball model with a zip running around the heel and a strap, so the back of the shoe opened completely and a foot could be placed rather than pushed in. The system has since been fitted to progressively more ordinary shoes, which is the better measure of whether it worked. By this generation of the Pegasus it had stopped presenting as an adaptation and simply looked like the trainer, the same midsole and outsole everyone else buys, with an entry method the wearer selects for their own reasons and does not have to explain.
