Rafael Nadal destroys shoes. His game is built on sliding, grinding stops and enormous lateral load, and this model was engineered around that problem: Nike merged the reinforced Cage line with the lighter Vapor line and built the outsole up with a hard-wearing material until it could be sold with a six-month durability warranty, which almost no tennis shoe carries. Playtesters rated the traction and stability among the best the company had produced, with a Zoom Air unit for cushioning, a frame around the foot for containment and a lacing arrangement designed to lock the midfoot down. The cost is weight and a break-in period that can run to a few hours of court time. This all-black version strips out the contrast entirely, leaving the reinforced panels and the cage structure to register as texture. It arrived at the start of 2021, by which point the shoe had become the standing recommendation for players who wear through outsoles faster than uppers.
