Cactus Plant Flea Market began in a Brooklyn apartment in 2015 and built its recognition on a single graphic idea, faces drawn with four eyes, before it built anything else. Lu has kept the label deliberately hard to buy from, which is context for what happens to a Dunk in her hands.
The Dunk is a 1985 basketball shoe with flat leather panels, and almost every collaboration on it works by recolouring those panels. This one refuses to. The suede is covered in Swarovski crystals across the entire visible upper, tinted to match the green underneath, so the shoe reads as texture and glare rather than as colour blocking. Light is doing the work that a graphic normally does.
Three structural changes come with it: a tongue padded well past what the model needs, double lace flaps that detach, and a swoosh scaled up beyond the panel it sits on (the last carried over from the label's Nike Blazer of 2019).
It released on 18 November 2020 at $550, roughly five times what a standard Dunk asked at the time.
