Nike launched the Hyperdunk on 7 April 2008 and called it the lightest and strongest basketball shoe it had made. The claim rested on Flywire, a construction that replaced layers of leather and foam with thin high-tensile cables laid into a thin skin, so the upper held the foot with filaments rather than material, and on a new lightweight foam that fed into the Lunarlon cushioning used across Nike basketball for years afterwards.
Kobe Bryant introduced it and wore it at the Beijing Olympics that summer with the American team that took back the gold medal, and nearly every Nike-sponsored national side played in a team colourway of the same shoe. It was the rare basketball launch where one model appeared on most of the floor.
After that the Hyperdunk settled into an annual cycle as the line for teams rather than individuals: a shoe designed to work for a guard and a centre out of the same box, sold in university and club colours. That is what this one is, in bright crimson with grey and black trim.
