Nike showed the first Pegasus at the 1982 New York City Marathon, and it has been in the line ever since, the longest-running franchise the company has and, for most of that time, the shoe it sells more of than any other. Longevity on that scale produces branches. The Pegasus Trail is one of them, taking the name off the road and onto dirt with a lugged outsole, a broader platform and a React midsole underneath. The waterproof version adds a membrane through the upper and an integrated gaiter at the collar to keep grit and splash out, at a weight penalty smaller than that technology's reputation suggests. Reviewers found the fourth generation noticeably grippier than earlier attempts and steadier over uneven ground.
