Tom Sachs builds functional objects out of plywood, foam core, hot glue and tape, and calls the results sculpture. In 2007 he assembled a full-scale Apollo lunar module, a mission control room running twenty-nine video monitors, and hand-sewn Tyvek spacesuits, and staged the whole thing as Space Program. In May 2012 the sequel, Space Program 2.0: MARS, took over the Park Avenue Armory in New York with terraforming rigs and a solar-powered boombox.
Nike began working with him that same year, and the Mars Yard came out of his conversations with NASA scientists rather than out of a design brief.
The 2.0 launched in 2017 at a Space Camp Sachs ran on Governors Island in New York: ten mental and physical obstacles, with finishing the course unlocking the right to buy a pair. The upper is off-white mesh, reinforced with nubuck in a maple tone; sport red picks out the Swoosh and the pull tabs at heel and tongue. Two insoles came in the box, one of them corded for wearing without socks.
