Martine Rose's partnership with Nike has run for years and has almost never produced the obvious thing. It began with a capsule she pre-released through classified ads rather than a launch, and the first piece to draw wide attention was a reworked Air Monarch IV (the plain white trainer sold in bulk to people who are not thinking about fashion), distorted with polyurethane inserts pushed underneath its leather. She later worked on the Shox, another silhouette with an awkward reputation.
The clothing has followed the same logic. Rather than restyling training pieces, the collections take garments from outside sport and build them with sportswear's materials and proportions, or take sportswear and cut it like tailoring. A trench coat is the clearest example of the first: a shape with no athletic history at all, carrying a Swoosh.
This one is finished in pitch blue, a colour that reads as navy in most light and as something stranger in direct sun. It is priced and cut as outerwear rather than as a collaboration souvenir.
