RS stands for Running System, the cushioning platform Puma introduced in 1986 and then attached to a run of increasingly odd experiments, including a shoe with a computer in the heel that logged distance and plugged into a home computer. The RS-X revived the name in 2018 as a chunky lifestyle silhouette rather than a running shoe, built on exaggerated layering and a bulky sole. The Winterized version is the seasonal reading of it: synthetic leather and textile replace the open mesh panels to hold up better against water and cold, and the insole is lined with a synthetic fur. In white the layering is harder to read than on the colour-blocked pairs (the panels register by texture and shadow instead), which makes this the quietest version of a design usually sold on being loud. It arrived in December 2019, at the end of a two-year stretch when almost every brand carried a heavily built lifestyle runner, and winterised make-ups were the standard way of extending one into a second season.
