Skate shoes have been arguing about soles for forty years. A vulcanised sole, rubber wrapped around the upper and cured onto it, flexes immediately and transmits board feel; a cupsole, stitched into a moulded shell, absorbs landings far better but starts stiff and feels disconnected. Vans built its identity on the first and eventually engineered a hybrid to capture some of the second, a cupsole cut with the waffle tread the company has used since it opened in 1966. This pro model sits on that construction, with a fused reinforcement layer under the suede where grip tape wears a shoe through first, and a padded collar over the ankle. Red across the entire upper leaves the sidestripe as the only interruption, which is about as understated as a signature shoe is ever allowed to be.
