The sidestripe arrived before the high-top did. Vans put the curved leather stripe on the Old Skool in 1977, drawn from a doodle by co-founder Paul Van Doren, and the tall model that followed a year later was the second shoe to carry it. That is how a piece of decoration became the mark the whole company is identified by. Reissue is the label Vans uses for builds cut closer to older patterns than current production, with proportions and details taken from the archive rather than from the season's standard last. The taijitu print here is repeated at a small enough scale that the upper reads as texture before the individual symbols resolve, which suits a shoe whose panels are already broken up by the stripe running through them.
