Vans built a family out of one pattern. The Era, the Old Skool and the Sk8-Hi share a footprint and an outsole, differing mainly in collar height and in how much leather sits above it, which is why the range reads as a set rather than a catalogue of unrelated products. The mid is the least discussed of those variations, cutting the collar just under the ankle bone: high enough to change the silhouette, low enough to leave the joint the high-top was built to protect largely uncovered. Underneath sits the same vulcanised construction and waffle tread the company has used since 1966. Biking Red is a saturated primary, the kind of colour Vans has always been willing to commit to because the shape can carry it, with the sidestripe the only element that has to stay readable against it.
