One Vans is older than all the others. The #44 Deck Shoe went on sale on 16 March 1966, the day the Van Doren Rubber Company opened its first shop in Anaheim and made pairs to order in the back of the building. It was renamed the Authentic in 1993. Nothing about the original was decorative (canvas, a vulcanised sole, a waffle tread for grip), and that plainness is exactly what makes it useful as a base for material experiments six decades later. Satin Lux was one of those, a 2018 programme that swapped canvas for satin across this shoe and the Old Skool while leaving construction, eyelets and outsole untouched. A silhouette originally sold to beachgoers and skateboarders ends up reading as evening wear, which only works because the shape itself asserts so little.
