The XLG scales the Samba up. adidas enlarged the pattern and set an EVA midsole between the upper and the outsole, so the shoe rides higher and reads bulkier than the flat original while keeping the same panel arrangement. This version uses a suede upper with the colours logged as Ivory, Collegiate Green and Gum. Green on cream is one of the model's oldest and best-liked pairings, which makes it an obvious choice for launching a new proportion: familiar colour, unfamiliar shape.

The XLG belongs to a wider pattern in the line. Once the Samba became a default, adidas began building variants that answered specific objections, and the most common one was that the original sits very flat and very thin underfoot.
