Two changes separate this from a standard black Superstar, and both are structural rather than printed. The serrated Three-Stripes are perforated, with individually coloured underlays showing through the holes, so the shoe reads black from a distance and multi-coloured up close. The lacing runs through loops rather than punched eyelets, a small modernisation of a detail that has been the same for decades.
An embroidered Trefoil on the lateral heel picks up the same colours as the underlays. The rest is left alone: black leather upper, moulded rubber shell toe, herringbone-tread cupsole. adidas released it September 17, 2020 at $90, positioning the colour work as a statement about inclusivity rather than as a seasonal graphic. It landed in the middle of the fiftieth anniversary year, when the Superstar was being pulled in several directions at once.
