The cage was the first thing people wanted removed. On the 2015 Ultraboost, a moulded plastic frame wrapped the midfoot, carried the lacing and anchored the Three Stripes; it gave the shoe its look and, for a lot of runners, squeezed the foot in a way the knit alone did not. adidas released the Uncaged in June 2016 in direct response, deleting the frame and reworking the Primeknit so the upper could do the holding itself.
What is left is the clearest view of the platform: knit from toe to collar, the full Boost midsole exposed along both sidewalls, and only a small heel counter for structure. The trade is looser lockdown for a softer, more forgiving fit, which is why the Uncaged has outlived its original purpose as a running variant and settled in as the everyday version of the shoe. This colourway keeps the knit in ash grey and puts colour where the cage used to be, blue at the heel and red at the lace loops.
