Hardware is the whole story. A row of white metal studs is set into the lateral heel and quarter panel of an otherwise blacked-out leather upper, breaking up a surface that the Superstar usually leaves flat and unbroken. Everything else is left in place to hold the shape recognisable: serrated Three-Stripes, the moulded rubber shell toe, a black midsole and a herringbone-pattern rubber outsole. Scarlet turns up as the third colour in the spec, a small hit against the black and white.
adidas ran it as a women's release on February 13, 2020 at $120. Studded uppers come and go in footwear, but they land differently on this model, which has spent most of its life being customised by the people wearing it rather than by the brand. Run-DMC pulled the laces out; later wearers swapped tongues, dyed panels and painted shells. A factory-set row of studs is the same instinct, arriving finished.
