Y-3 rarely takes adidas' newest performance hardware; it usually works from archive shapes or its own. The Prime X 2 Strung is an exception, and an odd one, because the shoe it borrows is already an outlier. adidas built the Prime X line specifically to ignore the 40mm stack limit and single-plate rule that govern competition footwear, arriving at 50mm at the heel, three layers of Lightstrike Pro and a dual carbon-infused plate system: a trainer sold on the basis that no sanctioned race will allow it.
The Y-3 version leaves the engineering alone and restyles the surface. The STRUNG upper, which lays individual threads zone by zone instead of weaving a uniform textile, is rendered in core black, and off white runs through the exposed midsole so the height of the platform is the first thing anyone sees. It carried a 450 dollar price against 300 for the adidas release, which is roughly the premium the line charges across the board.
